Matthew’s Gospel – Chapters 1-4
Matthew was written to persuade people to follow Jesus, and then to persevere in spite of difficulties and persecutions. Matthew was also written to persuade those who do follow Jesus that an essential part of Jesus’ mission was to call disciples, so an essential part of following Jesus is to draw others to him.
The climax of Matthew’s Gospel is not the resurrection account but 28:16-20. The resurrection has implications. It means Jesus has authority; it means this age has an end; it means Jesus is with us; and therefore it means we must go and make disciples.
Chapters 1-4 tell us who this Jesus is that we are about to meet, why he’s come and what it means to follow him. These chapters are an excellent overview of Jesus and of Christian discipleship, and are designed to make you want to read Matthew 5-28 to find all the details.
